Here's student writing that reminds us how hard a lot of immigrants have worked. Washington Heights student Luz Albarracin writes about why she admires her mother:

My Mother

By Luz Albarracin When I was a child, I admired my mother. Why?  Because she worked so much.

At home, I saw her making white knit hats every day. She sold them in the village market to have money to buy food for us. She worked in the fields, too, planting corn, beans and more.

My mother planted the seeds and paid a man to help plow with a bull. She also planted cabbage and potatoes. But that was not all. She took care of our sheep, pigs and chickens. She washed our clothes in the river. She got up very early and went to bed late.  My sisters and I helped her as much as we could. We had a lot of work in our family. But we had more love.

There are about 7,000 languages spoken around the world -- and they all have different sounds, vocabularies and structures. But do they shape the way we think? Cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky shares examples of language -- from an Aboriginal community in Australia that uses cardinal directions instead of left and right to the multiple words for blue in Russian -- that suggest the answer is a resounding yes. "The beauty of linguistic diversity is that it reveals to us just how ingenious and how flexible the human mind is," Boroditsky says. "Human minds have invented not one cognitive universe, but 7,000."
