What is a core vocabulary?

It’s very difficult to say exactly how many words there are in the English language because it depends how you count them and, of course, language is changing and growing all the time. But even at a conservative estimate, there are well over a quarter of a million distinct English words. That makes the task of teaching vocabulary to learners of English seem a rather daunting one.

And I always write in response: 
"So, what are the other students doing during that time?"

Let's share some ideas. When a student or a group makes a presentation to the class, what can the other students be doing, so that they are involved?

Around Town/Communities

The Seed for a Good Life—This episode is about a man who has been moving from job to job, and wants a more stable, long-term career.  He learns about making a resume and other job skills at the Queens Public Library, and also visits and finds out about a community garden in his neighborhood.

Sonam's Mom—This one is a story including multiple taxi drivers.  There are a lot of opportunities to talk about the City, neighborhoods, transportation, various immigrant and national/ethnic communities, and more.

Crossing the Street—Set in Sunset Park, this is a story about two young people from different places (one from China, one from Latin America), who live, work and are involved in schools in the Sunset Park neighborhood.  They meet and get to know each other, and sharing and enjoying their backgrounds and cultures with one another.  Lots of topics around neighborhood and neighbors, meeting and interacting with people from many other cultures, schools and school choices, cultural traditions around food, etc.

Voice recording in language learning is nothing new, but it has become a lot easier. Once upon a time, the audio-lingual method was very popular and language labs contained what was then cutting edge technology. Teachers have also been able to record students using tape recorders or dictaphones. Nowadays, using smartphones, students can easily record themselves speaking and share it instantly. The ideas presented here are aimed at teens and adults but voice recording can be done with younger learners too.

Strategies for Success: Supporting English/Multi-Language Learners in All Learning Environments

November 14th-16th, 2019 - Crowne Plaza, White Plains, NY

NYS TESOL is currently inviting proposal submissions related to the conference theme within the following nine categories:

There will be five different types of sessions at the 2019 conference:  

1) 70 minute workshop
2) 70 minute panel
3) 35 minute paper presentation
4) 20 minute teaching tip

5) Poster presentation

 

You may submit up to three proposals as the lead or co-presenter.
