40th Annual NYC Consortium for ABE/ESOL Conference

For ESOL and BE Adult Educators

Dear Adult Educators, Volunteers, Adult Learners and Future Adult Educators,

In 2019, the New York City Consortium for Adult Basic Education will hold its 40^th annual ABE/ESOL Conference on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the High School of Fashion Industries in Manhattan. In recognition of the ever-evolving landscape of adult education and the ongoing need for professional development, this year’s conference theme is: Celebrating 40 Years of Success: Learning, Growing, Sharing. We invite you and the members of your organization to participate in the ABE/ESOL Conference.

Since 1978, the ABE/ESOL Conference has served the diverse professional development needs of current and future adult educators in the areas of BE, CTE (Career & Technical Education), ESOL, ESL Literacy, High School Equivalency (HSE), and US Citizenship. New York City’s adult literacy programs continue to be a motivating force for the city’s vast population of adult learners seeking to achieve language proficiency or to gain literacy and numeracy skills. These programs open pathways to HSE credentials, further education and training, better jobs, and a more active role in learners’ communities. The Consortium, a non-profit organization composed of educators and volunteers from leading New York City adult education providers, remains at the forefront of efforts to meet the challenges facing the field.

To develop and thrive, adult educators, volunteers and future adult educators need a professional support network. We all benefit from engaging in dialogue, sharing creative teaching practices, and building partnerships with colleagues throughout the city and beyond. The ABE/ESOL Conference provides a forum for showcasing the tremendous creative energy and talent of practitioners while addressing critical issues that deeply impact adult education students and educators alike. In 2019, we plan to offer workshops in the following formats:

· Presenter-centered/traditional model

· Inquiry-based/participant-centered model

· Panel Discussion/Educators’ Roundtable

In addition to requesting your participation in the conference, the NYC Consortium for ABE/ESOL encourages you to submit proposals for presentations that highlight outstanding and innovative practices and illuminate relevant issues affecting our field. Successful workshops have actively involved participants in group activities, used audio-visual aids, and incorporated open discussions into their design. We welcome collaborative submissions.

Tom Wool (thomaswool@nypl.org) gives us a short summary of some of the new We Speak NYC shows (formerly We Are NY) that have health as a theme. Thanks Tom!

Shumi's Pantry—This one focuses on Shumi, who wants to be a nutritionist and gets a job at a supermarket. She wants to talk to the customers throughout the episode about health, and sometimes gets in trouble for advising them about choosing healthy food. There is a lot to talk about in terms of physical health, a healthy diet, customer service, and more. She ends up finding out more about food pantries and the SNAP program in the episode as well.

Making New Friends—This one features a few elderly characters who make use of the senior center, and also has two characters who are home health aides. Possible topics include senior centers and community centers, the job/career of a home health aide, exercise, eating well, health for senior citizens, aging in the City, etc.

Rafaela's Test—Focused on a young woman struggling with depression and anxiety. Mental health issues are the main focus of the episode. This one is more difficult to find other topics to talk about, besides the main focus.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

American Language Program (ALP) Winter Conference

The conference will begin with a plenary address by Lesley Painter-Farell, Director of the MA TESOL program at The New School. The plenary for the 2018 conference on vocabulary, given by Dr. Frances Boyd can be watched here. This address will be followed by four concurrent sessions and one hour of mini-presentations, as well as a networking/happy hour. Breakfast and lunch are included with admission.

We welcome proposals from our colleagues at all New York area universities, colleges, and schools, and we are interested in receiving proposals that focus on either practical approaches and techniques or research-informed presentations that demonstrate how students learn, remember, and use the language skills and knowledge they have studied and practiced in the classroom. To submit a proposal use this form; proposals will be accepted until January 14, 2019. We are especially interested in presentations from which attendees will take away practical classroom applications and ideas.

WEEKLY TIPS FOR INDEPENDENT LEARNING

Hola! I'm Elke and I teach ESOL in Washington Heights and Literacy at the Harlem Library. Like most of you, I am excited at the beginning of a new cycle and so are my students. Each cycle I try to use that excitement to inspire students to study more at home. Regularly... :) while having a little bit of fun with it, too. I'll share one activity to encourage outside practice here each week this cycle.

Week 1: Getting-to-know you handouts for beginners and Quizlet/Flashcards

This week I'll focus on beginners.

You can adapt the questions for higher levels, of course.

How to make the most of one activity in class and at home? Here are a few options:

* pre-teach vocabulary and question formation. I usually start only with "be" questions in the first lesson (What's your ? Where are you from? What's your favorite... etc) and add can, do, have in subsequent lessons.

* practice pronunciation with drills

* Model the activity and then students do Q&A with different partners

* review results together in class

* introduce Quizlet

Quizlet.com is a great flashcards(-and more!) website and app that also has audio. I created a flashcards set with 25 vocabulary sentences from all activities in this link: https://quizlet.com/_5yo2jy

* practice with this set in class, so students are familiar with Quizlet's interface.

Click on the bottom right of a card to flip it, click at the arrows at the bottom to get to the next card.

It's good to have students in groups of 4 or by table, and go around, 1 Quizlet card/question per group.

* show students how to use Quizlet on their Smartphones (and/or computers if needed)

Settings should be set to WiFi - NYPL first.

* Outside of class: Students ask friends and family members all questions from the handout(s)

Encourage them to practice asking questions every day.

Alternative to Quizlet:

If most students in your class use technology, print out a set for the ones that don't (or for first time Quizlet use, print for all)

If the majority of your students don't have technology access, print Quizlet for all.

For future projects or handouts, use paper flashcards. Create sample sets in class, so students learn how to work with Flashcards and keep creating their own. Tip: Hold sets with rubberband or in ziplock bags.

Important: Staff Meeting 1/25/19:

Hello everyone,

  Our next Adult Learning Center quarterly staff meeting is scheduled for Friday, January 25,  10:00am-1:30pm at the Stephen A Schwarzman Library on 42nd Street and 5th Avenue in the Trustees Room.

 Use the 42nd Street entrance, and BE SURE TO WEAR YOUR STAFF ID. 

During a portion of this meeting colleagues from the Human Resources Office will be leading an in-person follow up training on a Harassment Free Workplace. By NYS law, this training is required for all NYPL staff, full time, part time and hourly.  

Please let your Hub Manager know if you are unable to attend the January 25. This will allow us to help you schedule your participation at an alternate training session facilitated by a different department. We will try to identify alternatives but we hope you will make every effort to attend our department’s training.
