For Beginners:
Check out some of Elke’s getting to know you games -
Question games only with the verbs ‘be’ / ‘can’ / and ‘do’
Cut up a page into individual questions.
Each student gets a question. Mingle, find a partner, talk about your questions. T sets time limit/gives audio signal.
Exchange your question with your old partner, find a new partner, talk.
Repeat.
The PDF also has a ‘be/do’ handout.
For ‘can’ exercises, go to Ventures Student Book 1, p. 100, 101.

TECH TIPS
You can store different document “online” / “in a cloud.” You can upload documents to Drive or create documents in Drive.
Every gmail-email account is connected to a Google Drive for that email. You can share people on documents.
Here’s an overview of important documents we store on Google Drive:
Class rosters
- Format: Google Sheet (Excel equivalent on Drive)
mark attendance with X for present, A for absent
- elective class rosters (no elective classes in the summer cycle)
Lesson Plan folders
- Format: Google Doc (Word equivalent on Drive)
- 1 folder per class/cycle, with templates for each lesson)
shared with your Hub Manager - sharing with other teachers is voluntary
- Google Drive (My Documents equivalent)
Master Class List Summer 2017
- Format: Google Doc (Word equivalent)
includes teacher contact info at the end of the document
Curriculum for each cycle
- Format: PDF (download and print only)

10 Questions for Sandra Ham

Background
1. Where are you from and what brought you to NY?
I’m from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I came to NY in 2010 when my husband got transferred here.
2. When did you decide you wanted to be an ESOL/Adult Literacy teacher? Why?
I got my TESL certification in 2004 - I had an English degree and I was working in a bank at the time. I loved meeting people from different cultures and I thought that teaching ESOL would be a good career path for me as well as being more enjoyable than finance. I was right!
3. Have you ever taught in another country?
How has that shaped you as a person and as a teacher?
  I have taught in South Korea for six months. I lived in a small town on Jeju Island where I was one of the only foreigners. Living in a country where I didn’t know the language was challenging and stressful at times but the experience helped me to empathize with ESL students. I learned a little bit of Korean - introductions, directions, ordering food, etc. I didn’t have a chance to take a class so I had to study on my own with books and CD’s. I depended on help from my fellow teachers to translate for me countless times - when I went to the doctor’s office, booking plane tickets, telling taxi drivers where to go…
I became very good at mime!
4. What is the biggest challenge and the most rewarding thing for you as an educator?
I strive to create an atmosphere where students feel comfortable taking risks and aren’t afraid of making mistakes. It’s really rewarding to see students from all different backgrounds work together on a project or presentation. One project we did for the work theme was ‘Job Interview Advice’ - students had to come up with advice as to what you should and should not do before and during a job interview. Everyone said you should not chew gum during a job interview!
5. Do you have any special story you would like to share about a student or a class?
I don’t have a story about any specific student but I really admire the students who work all day and then come to class at night.
I enjoyed teaching the History and Citizenship class last semester. I’m also interested in teaching Literacy classes one day.
7. How do you encourage students to practice English outside of class?
I encourage students to watch movies and TV shows in English and to listen to English music. (They can look up the lyrics to songs on lyrics.com) Watching the news is good practice, too, because the broadcasters speak clearly. I always tell students to spend time with friends or classmates who don’t speak their native language so they have to practice.
 8. What is your favorite movie?
One of my favorite movies is Frida - it’s a biographical movie about the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The cinematography is beautiful and the performances by Salma Hayak as Frida Kahlo and Alfred Molina as Diego RIvera are excellent.
9. What nobody knew...
What do you like to do in your free time? Do you have a Black Belt in Karate? A secret recipe or amazing pet? Won an award?
I love reading so it’s great to work in a library. The Neopolitan Novels by Elena Ferrante are riveting. I do yoga and I enjoy hiking. Traveling is my passion - my travel wish list is insanely long. Ireland was a lovely country - great music, great and not-so-great weather. This fall I’m going to Sicily. I’m getting stressed out planning this trip because there are too many things to see and do there.
10. What is your favorite place / activity in NYC?
There are so many fantastic places in New York. I like Eataly for the delicious Italian food and I try to go to Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacourte Theater every summer. The productions are amazing and FREE!
