WANY We Are New York – The Wedding (Getting Lost – Video) Ahmed’s and Mohammed’s “Getting lost in NYC” story in “The Wedding” is a student favorite and great for teaching directions. Here is a video with only Ahmed/Mohammed scenes, here’s the YouTube link:  The transcript for all scenes is on the "Wedding" page of the WANY-Wiki:  alc-wany.wikispaces.com   Enjoy!

Here are three teaching material tips from teacher Diana Vayserfirova:

1. Story Cubes ($9.99 at Target)
Best used in small groups of students to generate discussion and storytelling/writing. Good to model with volunteers first.

2. Bingo ($6.16 on Amazon)

Great for minimal pairs, spelling and pronunciation.

3. Online Videos (free) "Tourist in your own town" by The NY Landmarks Conservancy:  The videos are for advanced students.

Tourist In Your Own Town #35 - Edgar Allan Poe Cottage

Date: October 21, 2014

Edgar Allan Poe, the famous American author and poet, lived in this cottage from 1846-1849 in what is now the Bronx. It was here that Poe cared for his ailing wife Virginia who was suffering from tuberculosis and it is where he wrote “Annabel Lee,” “The Bells,” and “The Cask of Amontillado.” After Poe died in 1849 the house was slated for demolition, but a public outcry led to its preservation in 1902. In 1913 this shrine was moved across the street to its present location.

Tourist In Your Own Town #34 - Prospect Park

Date: August 19, 2014

Take a look at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, a scenic landmark that covers almost 600 acres and contains splendid sculptures, historic memorials, and incredible architecture. Designed in 1865, the park is considered Frederick Law Olmsted’s and Calvert Vaux’s masterpiece.

Working with the topic “Volunteering” in Ventures 4 or Ventures Transitions? Student Project idea: If you had 10 million dollars, what kind of non-profit organization would you start? (Also a good review of Conditional II) Discuss with students first, in small groups, then students create a brochure or poster for “their” organizations. Here are two examples from Elke's Harlem Level  students: (1st drafts, not corrected yet) Hard to believe those are not real organizations :)
