Looking for new
curriculum textbooks but don't teach at an ALC?
We scanned a few Units
from the new books "Active Reader" Level 2 and 3, and "Health
Stories" on the health wiki:

EDMODO
At last week's ALC All-Staff meeting, Jean Choi shared her knowledge and use of the website Edmodo and encouraged us to use it with our groups. I was personally very inspired by her presentation. In Staten Island, teachers Julie Romacker and Joanne Springstead are using it- and I hope others are too!
I created a group for NYPL teachers so that you can give it a try if you'd like. Remember, this is for teachers only. You can share resources there, or simply say hello. You can join by using the code below, or by emailing me directly: elizabethschade@nypl.org
CLASS
VOCABULARY LISTS
At the Teacher Meeting Jean also shared a
vocabulary group work technique with us.
Here are Elke's notes:
Students select vocabulary words
(e.g. from a text read in class) and create a class dictionary, including:

A definition (rephrased in their own words)
·
Used in a sentence
·
A drawing.
Here are some examples

The class dictionary can be on paper or online - on Edmodo, a Wikipage, other sites.
In my Harlem Level 5/6
class we collect vocabulary on a class wiki:
In each class we're planning to add 5
or so new words.
Maybe now we’ll add more…. I shared the photos
above with my students after the meeting and they loved the idea.
Here’s a few vocab
sheets they've made so far: (note that “motivate” can be drawn J) Some students added IPA. In my class, we first do peer correction, and then the teacher double checks before uploading. Some students upload themselves, if you're lucky, you can find a student - technical assistant in class.
 
We now add snapshots of
the artwork to the class wiki. At the end of the cycle we’ll have a few
informal quizzes, mostly students quizzing each other. We’ll see how it goes…
