Use this free online tool to help your adult learners develop their digital literacy skills as they learn to navigate and complete the online Census form.

The tool looks and reads exactly like the actual online Census site. Help icons throughout provide explanations in popup balloons. Teaching tips are provided in a Note to Teachers on the landing page. Navigate to the tool here: https://tinyurl.com/
Information that learners enter on the tool is not saved, stored, or sent to the Census Bureau. The tool is based on the Census Bureau's own video tutorial.
The online practice form was developed by the New England Literacy Resource Center at World Education in partnership with the NCL.

Needs Assessment for Course or Curriculum Design
A new course or curriculum should be designed based on the needs of the students. However, often teachers begin a curriculum or course design project without first stopping to carefully consider and assess the needs of the learners. In this American English Live event, we look at the process of needs assessment. We review several methods for learning what student needs are, including a menu of different needs assessment techniques and options. Then we consider how to use that information in course design, looking at basic steps and choices in development.

→ Register now for the Rennert/NYS TESOL 2020 Conference Leap into the Future of Teaching, to be held on February 29, 8:30-3:30 in Manhattan. This conference brings together English language educators and administrators in private language schools, community colleges, and university IEPs from across New York.
→ Register for the Applied Linguistics Winter Conference, to be held Saturday, March 7 at the University of Rochester.
→Submit a proposal for Tech in Ten by Friday, March 13! This event showcases TESOL professionals and the educational technology they use. Each presenter has 10 minutes to overview their idea, followed by a brief Q&A. Tech in Ten is on Tuesday, April 21 from 6-8pm at Baruch College.
→Submit your proposal for our NYS TESOL Annual Conference 2020! The Conference Proposal Submission Form is due April 6. Being our 50th anniversary conference means it’s going to be even more amazing, enriching, and energizing than ever...come as a presenter! We have some new formats, such as the teaching tips and electronic village which might work really well for sharing your ideas!→ Register now for the annual NYSABE Conference on March 19-21! → The 2020 American Language Program Winter Conference will be held on Saturday, February 29 from 9:30 AM to 6 PM at Columbia University's Faculty House. The theme is Curricula & Materials: Lessons, Units, Courses.
→The Applied Linguistics and TESOL Program at Teachers College cordially invites you to the 2020 APPLE Lecture (Applied Linguistics and Language Education). Dr. Richard Donato will speak about Culture as Context: Exploring Cultural Products, Practices, and Perspectives on Friday, March 6 from 4:30-6:00 PM in Thompson 136.
