ADVOCACY UPDATE

Dear Colleagues,

Mayor Bill de Blasio, City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, and the New York City Council have agreed on a city budget for Fiscal Year 2019 —and it's good news for libraries.

The city's three public library systems received at least $60 million in capital funds for Fiscal Year 2019, and a $16.7 million increase in operating funding: in other words, everything we requested. In a tight budget year, this is a major victory that will allow the Library to cope with rising costs and maintain the services that New Yorkers need. It also provides the Library with some much-needed flexibility to evaluate hiring and other policies that we know have impacted staff day-to-day. 

Thank you so much for all of your hard work, not just during advocacy season—NYPL sent 100,000 letters to elected officials over the last few months, held two successful hearings and rallies on the steps of City Hall, and generated thousands of supportive posts on social media — but all year long. In its budget announcement, the City labeled libraries an "essential service." It has never been clearer that our leaders understand the vital role that libraries play in strengthening individuals and their communities; that's because of the work you do every day. Big thanks to our supporters—including members of the public, our three borough presidents, and DC37—for sharing the importance of that work, and helping to ensure that libraries were a priority this budget season.

We will continue to evaluate the City's budget allocation and will share more on how it will impact the Library in the coming weeks. For now, congratulations to all on another successful advocacy season. And on behalf of the New Yorkers who will benefit from this news, thank you again for all that you do.
